Angry Crocs

I was reading the Denver Business Journal yesterday and found a great article about some angry Crocs!

Crocs, a shoe maker, is suing 11 companies, "...claiming their shoes infringe on its patents and copy its distinctive look." Crocs is a local company located in Niwot, CO just up I-25!

I have to confess I am one of the people who have purchased one of the imitation Crocs! Airwalk's are half the price and my kids destroy shoes! We love them because they are easy on, easy off and I can wash them in the dishwasher!

How important is the "original" of something? It's true, I own a pair of original Crocs and they are nothing like the Airwalk's in my house. They are more comfortable, more durable and if I got in a bind and needed a quick meal I could boil them!

It's interesting to me that so many of us will sacrifice the quality of the "original" _________ (you fill in the blank) if it costs to much. When it comes right down to it most of us aren't willing to pay what it costs to have the best. This is especially true if there is a cheaper version that at first glance looks just like it!

I think this problem has sneaked it's way into following Jesus. We want the cheap version. We want the Airwalk version of Jesus. The "original" version...well...it costs to much. Why would I pay the ultimate price when I have something I already like? The only version of Jesus worth purchasing is one that costs you everything, even your life. Don't listen to me, listen to Jesus,

"27And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. 28"Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? 29For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, 30saying, 'This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.' 31"Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple." - Luke 14:27-33

Well, you now sound just like your mentor, Mr. Fritz Dale who, as we all know, could find a link between our walks w/ Christ and a laminated, steroid-using squirrel doing push-ups. I am truly impressed. Crocs and Jesus. Who'd a thunk it?

Actually, Fritz was more prone to asking you to evaluate you spiritual life as it relates to certain objects. For example, "Students, tonight I want you to compare your walk with Jesus to a flower. Are you the leaf? Maybe some of you are the stamen? Or maybe, just maybe, you might be the pistol.

Oh I don't know, I think FTD would have you evaluate the cleanliness of the crocs and what that says about your spiritual walk. If the Crocs are dirts and smell of toe jam it could mean that you are either hitting the streets for Christ or allowing the world to jam up your Christian Walk. Really, truly a versitile analogy.

Nice thought Phil...I can almost hear him saying...like a Croc has holes to let air in where in your life is their room for the wind of the Holy Spirit to blow through and refresh you!

You have been talking about marketing a lot lately. Check out this teaser trailer and tell me who you think they are trying to target:

My first take is us...those of us who grew up watching it.

phil, what do you think?

You were raised a human, but are not one of them...

They have such a capacity for good, the just lack the Light...

So I have sent you, my only Son...

Sounds pretty "Christian" to me.

I can't wait to see it!

I have seen this several times, I have to say, I think this will be like what I remember Superman being the first time I saw it, without the knowledge of the cheesy special effects. Looks great. I think the superman "myth" is a savior myth. I think what this exemplifies is that man has a need and a desire to be saved by something or someone greater than themselves, thus the hundreds of superheroes we have created over time. Probably doeesn'y hurt their chances if they tap into the evangelical community either, though with references to Superman being Christ all they may do is intrigue the kids and push away the adults. Hi Brian.

Stephens
my only question is . . .
do we really lack the light to know how to be good people? And is what can Superman show us that we need to see? I don't like getting all up in arms over movies, and I am not here, but . . . actually, let me think about this. I will blog on it later.

is that okay dan?

Hey Phil!

I guess the part the got me was the "I send you, my only son..." This seems like an interesting choice of words. Plus, in previous movies I was under the impression SMan was sent because his planet was being destroyed, not to save Earth.

This movie takes on a whole different theme. Add that with LOTR, Narnia, Passion, End of the Spear, and it just seems quite a few movies are being targeted to the Evangelical community.

This came up because I saw this preview a few weeks ago and didn't think anything of it, and then this weekend at church they took the words and put them over the trailer for the Passion and I was sort of blown away.

Alice would love this stream...

Phil-great to hear from you Big Sexy! Love your show. Interesting thoughts! I would agree with your summary that man has a desire and a need to be saved by someone or something greater than themselves.

B-steve - Dude, great thought on Superman coming to Earth to save and interesting thoughts as it relates to targeting movies towards the evangelical community. After the election, where the "evangelicals showed up at the polls", LOTR, The Passion, and Narnia, a Tipping Point happened and we are seeing a swing.

On a side note it would be an interesting dialogue to start talking about Hollywood targeting the evangelical sub-culture and whether that's a good thing. Are they targeting us because they think we are loaded, or are they in a sense giving us what we want to be entertained by the idea that they are promoting our values and taking us to the cleaners for 400 million?

I'm most concerned that people buy the original Crocs, because I have stock in them! But as for me, I'd buy the imitations; they're cheaper dude!

Dan Luebcke said...

Al, I don't understand why you would have stock in a company and then abandon them when it comes to buying a product that they make.

dude.
